As the Co-CEOs of The Smart Energy Company, they have not only built a thriving business but have also helped Canadian farmers reduce energy costs, increase sustainability, and take control of their electricity production.

An Entrepreneurial Visionary 

Mark McAloon founded The Smart Energy Company in 2016, driven by a deep passion for energy and the potential for sustainable change. With his years of entrepreneurial experience, Mark saw an opportunity to deliver innovative solutions to Canadian farmers that promote sustainability and efficiency. His goal was clear:

•  Help farmers save money
• Reduce their dependence on utilities
• Work with others committed to helping the environment

Recognizing the financial and environmental benefits of solar energy for agriculture, Mark developed early iterations of the NOREASTER® solar energy system —a ground-mounted solar system that would be designed and manufactured right here in Canada.

Bringing Communities Together 

A few years later, Jeff McAloon joined his brother in leading the company as Co-CEO, bringing his expertise in community-building and sustainable business growth. Mark and Jeff grew up rooted in family values, hard work, and community, so working with farmers was a natural transition.

For Jeff, working alongside Mark has been more than just a professional endeavour—it’s been an opportunity to bring meaningful solutions to the farm community.

Jeff and Mark worked closely with early farmer customers to get their feedback and refine the NOREASTER to what it is today:

• A durable racking system, made in Canada and built to last for decades in our winters
• A scalable and DIY -friendly (“In-a-box”) solar energy system design
• Ground-mounted solar panels that can be installed on any unusable farmland for maximum efficiency

Jeff and Mark understand that solar power for farms is more than just an investment—it’s a strategic move toward energy security.

A Family Business Helping Other Family Businesses 

At its core, The Smart Energy Company is a proudly Canadian family-run business that’s dedicated to helping other family businesses succeed. Mark and Jeff’s shared commitment to fostering energy independence has become a guiding principle for the company. They understand the challenges farmers face and are passionate about providing the tools and resources needed to reduce energy costs and enable farmers to generate their own power.

Their goal is to help Canadian farmers—including greenhouse operators and dairy, poultry, and pork producers— save $1 billion in utility costs. This isn’t just about the numbers; it’s about creating a better future for farmers and their families by reinvesting those savings into the parts of their business that matter most.
